Radiant Barriers in a Desert Climate

Heat moves three ways: conduction, convection and radiation. Conventional insulation is aimed at the first two. A radiant barrier addresses the third, and in a place with this much direct sun the radiant component is a much larger share of the total than it would be in a milder climate.

A radiant barrier is a reflective surface, usually foil faced, installed in the attic so that it faces an air space. The air space is not optional. A reflective surface in direct contact with another material conducts heat straight through and does nothing.

What a Radiant Barrier Does and Does Not Do

It reduces radiant heat transfer from the hot underside of the roof deck into the attic and the materials below it. In Phoenix, on a sun exposed roof, that is a real effect and it is why radiant barriers are far more common here than in most of the country.

It is not a substitute for insulation. It has essentially no R-value of its own, so it does not replace attic insulation and should never be sold as though it did. It also loses effectiveness as dust accumulates on the reflective face over the years. Anyone presenting a radiant barrier as a complete solution is overselling it.

Where It Fits in the Plan

Radiant barriers work best as an addition to a vented attic that already has adequate insulation at the floor, where the ductwork is not the main problem. In that configuration the barrier reduces attic temperature and the insulation handles the rest.

Where the plan is to seal and insulate the roof deck instead, a radiant barrier is usually redundant, because the deck assembly is dealing with the heat before it reaches the attic at all. We will say so rather than sell both.

Installation Detail

Orientation matters, the air gap matters, and continuity matters. A barrier installed with gaps, or stapled tight against the underside of the deck with no air space, will not perform as intended.
